About Us

Hospice of Sussex – History

Hospice of Sussex was founded under the umbrella of Hospice of Saint John in 2003 by Walter & Jeanette Cosman and Ken & Renelle Baker.  These individuals took the initiative to train as palliative care and grief counselling volunteers for patients and their families facing an end of life illness.  In 2006 Hospice of Sussex became independent and formed it’s own Board of Directors with an Executive Director.
Our mission was to offer caring, knowledgeable volunteers to provide support to clients and families facing end of life and grief support to families following the loss of a loved one.
Hospice is a registered non-profit organization free of charge to Sussex and area residents and no formal referral is required.  Simply give us a call.

Hospice of Sussex – New Beginnings

As the result of a crippling global pandemic, Hospice of Sussex took the opportunity to develop a strategic plan.  This plan expanded our services to include clients facing a life limiting healthcare journey such as chronic/progressive/debilitating illnesses and dementia. We also expanded our grief services to offer free counselling to the community at large by a trained professional.  Another important part of the plan was to gain some financial independence.  As a community charity, Hospice of Sussex receives no government funding. We depend on yearly fundraising events and very generous local donors to help cover costs associated with training, continuing education and office support.  Thus, our social enterprise “Mobility+” was born.  Started in May 2025 we provide access to home healthcare equipment through both new and used donated items.  The sale/rental of this equipment offers some financial independence, while reducing waste and offering an affordable community service.
Hospice of Sussex is built on the foundation of it’s many caring and compassionate volunteers and trusted partnerships.  If you’re interested in becoming a member of our team and touching a life in a meaningful way contact us at (506) 432-5001 or Email info@hospicesussex.ca
